Work is kicking my ass lately

All this "doing the impossible because India fucks up" is getting old.

So, by the time I get home I already have really bad eye strain and
don't feel like getting on the computer....

I only ask because I had a strange feeling of deja vu with that statement from my last job

I work at Target HQ in Minneapolis. I'm in Point-Of-Sale, so our group does the
programs that run on the machines in the lanes where you check-out.

I used to be one of the lead programmers writing the stuff, then about 6 years
ago they started pushing all of us into Technical Architect positions (just tell
India HOW to do it, and they will write the code).

So now I tell them how to do it.
And they do it wrong.
And I tell them how again.
And they do it wronger.

No not in IT but I worked for an American Company in the Oil business that makes Geophysical equipment for oil exploration.

I was a Production Planner and we used to outsource jobs to India, China and Dubai.

Eventually my job was absorbed into the plant in Dubai where the labour is much cheaper.

The Indians and Chinese used to Fuck up regularly and I had to chase them up to get parts shipped to the Dubai plant in time to make production targets.

Somtimes we had to use airfreight instead of sea freight for something like say 20 tonnes of cable to make the targets. The extra expense was something you can only imagine !!!!

Thats why they call it WORK, not FUN TIME..

They pay you good. your lucky.

Lucky in work, yes.
Other areas... not so much.

I don't mind working hard. It's the: "It's better to be CHEAP than RIGHT" part that bugs me.

I can do the work of 5 east Indians. Because it's not really 5. It's one guy that knows his shit helping the other 4
who can't find their ass with a flashlight.

They don't always pay you good....they want their pound of flesh and more.

Quality has gone out of the window now but it has to be cheap to compete in the world markets.

No doubt in my mind that the industrial expansion of China and the Far eastern countries and India have caused the world wide recession that we are now all suffering from.

These countries are getting richer and improving their standards of living and the cost is that that the Western countries are paying for it with unemployment as our jobs are outsourced by the greedy companies who are now obsessed with cost cutting on a massive scale.

I have watched this happening for quite a few years....in fact I have known since 2004 that my job was likely to head East as indeed it did so I could only wait.....but I got another 5 years out of it and a reasonable settlement.

It's no coincidence that the fall of Communism was a good thing for the people under it but it opened the doors to those countries cashing in on our wealth.

Sorry for my little rant ....but that's the summary of the way I see it

And I agree with you.

I would be--mostly--ok with it, if they could actually do good work.
But the large majority of them can't.

I know I can do it better. But I'm not given the chance.

Instead BAD CODE goes into 1800 stores and causes problems.
I don't feel right about that. But I stand no chance to fix it.

Totally agree Peter. I spent 28 years working for the same electronics company (STC, ITT, Nortel, Bookhams Technology. We had a few name changes through different owners!) Then one day they announced they had taken over a small company and part of the deal was a massive empty factory in China. 4 years later we all lost our jobs. That was 3 years ago, and there are still major quality issues with the Chinese made components!
I was lucky to get another job in Opto-electronics close to home.

Thanks guys....I guess we are all fellow victims.

We just had an election in the UK but nobody talks about this stuff.

Each party just blames the other without looking at the worldwide picture and realising that they are all to blame for not recognising the real problems.

Just proof really that the big greedy corporations have more power than the politicians.
