I'm Not Here
Just a jam.
Dean guitar -- Invader on rhythm, Dimebucker on lead
The Invader just KILLS through the Marshall (gain on 3). Loving that tone.
I am not here to save you
like a ghost I pass through
you can see but not touch (yeah)
you know I miss you so much
I am not here to take you
it's best you find someone new
someone that you can feel (yeah)
find a boy who is real
I am not here for your tears
that you gathered for years
it's time for you to move on (yeah)
just remember my song

Hi Z.......should have got to this sooner....Sorry
I have mixed feelings about this track.......there is a lot of good things about it so lets be positive first.
The guitars are fine....that huge distorted riff on the rhythm......and the tone of the lead with lots of echo is getting more like Sabbath with each track. Quite a vintage rock sound....so guitars are fine
The vocals also are better than when you used to double track them....clearer and more defined and not hidden away like they often felt when layered with double tracking....bravo for taking that step
The drums are OK.....but then again I know that you are going to move ahead with the drums in your tracks so there is no point in saying more about the drums.
So what are the negatives.....
Basically the track runs from start to finish without any variation....its almost a monotone (there I said it...Damn). At one point it sounds like you are trying to catch your breath.
It desperately need a chord change or a middle section or something to lift it.There is also no space in there to make it breathe.
The other thing is that I cannot hear a bassline.....if you put a bass on there it is either not coming through the mix or maybe its exactly the same riff as the rhythm guitar and is being drowned out by the big guitar tone. A nice deep bass would help a great deal.
Thats my thoughts on this one Z........be interesting to see what you think.
Try comparing this to one of your classic tracks like Hell's Gate and see how it sounds !!!!!

Good words Peter! Yes, I agree. I think I was meaning to add bass and forgot.
Drums are over simple.
You are right about the monotony. Kind of back to my "trying to be hypnotic" ways....
Never fear calling it like it is. It helps.
I am getting some cool ideas already with the drum set. I need lots of practice...
Thanks!!!

Re: I'm Not Here
The drums will not only help your sound but using a different instrument can help inspire you to write some tracks in a different style or direction.
It will be interesting to hear what you do with them ......its bound to bring something new to the mix.
Always glad to lend an ear on your tracks Z and I hope my breakdowns help .....I try to call it like I hear it
I think I am becoming the new "Simon Cowell" on this site

A little tough love never hurt anyone...
We enjoy having you here, that's for sure!
I really value your knowledge of song structure, synths, and percussion.
(coming from a highly experimental background, it helps me to hear those things)
I agree about new instruments. I've been hearing drum parts in my head that are really hard
to get down "on paper," but maybe I can play them.... It does feel good to hit the skins. The pads
seem real durable.

Yes...And Z also for that. Z knows structure for sure!...And its just nothing i have..So thats why i love it so in you guys.
I trust what Peter "hears" in a tune or track.....I love the truth in his words.

Interesting DACE......You may not consciously use an organised structure but it comes through in your music from the flow of what you play.
I hear it in most of your tracks quite clearly like a trademark sound......I could tell a DACE track anywhere
Re: I'm Not Here
Thank you Peter.....Very nice words.
Im recording some later i think?.....

Re: I'm Not Here
It's so cool that we are all so different.
That means I can learn different things from everyone.
Would love to hear more recordings Dace. That Roland is inspiring you for sure!
And I agree with Peter. You have structure Dace... it's just organic, or subconscious or something.
Not "planned."
I "plan" some of my structure and then try to "flow" on top of that.
Peter has an awesome way of sliding layers in and out of his structure and putting together complex arrangements.

Its all smoke and mirrors Z
I plan a basic structure to work around ...just like you ...and I flow over it too.
Difference is that I often use some complex arpeggios on the synths or specially programmed parts that i make myself. I often use delay times that are synced to the bpm both on synths and guitars but sometimes set at different intervals.
Other thing is that once I have laid down my parts I then move on to Stage 2 which is the production and mixing. I am lucky enough to have excellent equipment ready to use and that makes a huge difference....for instance I can Automix parts in and out to do a lot of creative things in the mix.
You would mbe surprised how few parts i actually use on some tracks but the production can make them sound complex.
Thats why you have not heard any new tracks from me lately......I have been re looking at some of my techniques and working on some new approaches to how I lay tracks down.
We are all different....I agree....but thats what makes all music so interesting
Re: I'm Not Here
I had it loud, it sounded awesome....VERY COOL trippy, sound! HUGH tone on the guitars, and its a BIG MIX!
Much like a "ride", or movie? To cool the guitar parts! love the "spy-movie" vibe and sound in the middle part of the tune when it builds to it (lead stuff)....Anyway... shit man...
I was so "into" the listen, i did not hear anything... HARD to get there..THIS is "there"...Very much expression, and feel i think.....Its just a zone-type-track..............As heavy as it is, its mellow in a way. Has 'drag', or slack, flux??
Hit me right....Enjoyed alot.

Thanks Bro. Yeah I wanted it to be draggy. Hard to explain. Like it's slowing down.
Glad you enjoyed it loud. I mix pretty damn loud.
