I agree -- for music purposes anyway.
Not sure it will go away. They are pretty cool for other applications (color textbook reading and such).
Some college students are now carrying them since it's easier to carry around one iPad than 20 books.
(and I think the electronic versions of the textbooks are cheaper).
But yeah a synth without real knobs is kinda gay.

Yes.....the I-Pad itself is useful but I was talking about the music app
There are much better VST instruments that are free on the web.

Ah yes!
I wonder how long before someone turns a Kinect into a music controller (Xbox motion sensing camera thing).

Re: Nano Studio for iPad
This is a bit more useful. But I wonder how many tracks it can play/record at once and how many effects?
Would be cool for recording Acoustic guitar in a cave. (but a LOT more expensive than a battery powered tape recorder)

Yes, but then you just have 1 hardware synth.
With Garage Band on an iPad [theoretically] you could use any Audio Unit plugin available (100s of them).
Personally I would rather buy hardware synths. But a used Moog is like $5000.

We are really talking about that old argument Soft synths versus Harware Synths at the end of the day.
Well having both I know which I prefer ......Hardware...but thats just my preference and that doesn't mean its better.
I will still continue to use both but I only use Soft Synths sometimes for convenience and that would mainly be Reaktor because that does have unique sounds that are high quality and very usable for Ambient and Soundscapes.
In reality most of the standard Soft Synths are emulations of Hardware with inferior sounds and require a lot of processing power from your CPU. Try playing them live.
You will still find that recording studios will stand by hardware as well although they will have both in the better studios.
You don't have to spend 5000$ on a second hand Moog for quality sounds either. Buy a good virtual analogue like the Supernova or Access Virus used for probably 500$ or less which will do all those sounds and only the purists will know the difference on a recording. Both of those synths can produce mega sounds and the Supernova is easy to program Moog type sounds and others yourself.
If you need any more proof then I will just say......go back and listen to my tracks...they speak for themselves
Re: Nano Studio for iPad
Yeah I agree.
Just as soft synths are catching up in quality to hardware, so are thing like tube amp simulators
and guitar synths. But they still aren't quite there.
It's purely a matter of convenience to me. And transportability.
If I wanted to record 8 tracks somewhere remote, would I want to carry a bunch of equipment that
doesn't even run on batteries, or a small portable device?
Different tools for different jobs.
Makes perfect sense.

There are quality synths that can do that....Waldorf Bolfeld, Korg Pandora and I believe Access do one too. There's probably others....I dont keep up with these things.
I'm quite happy with what I've got and even if spending money was an option I am running out of space
I have made tracks solely using a laptop with VST's in the past......in a hotel room to pass the time while on holiday
Re: Nano Studio for iPad
You have great gear...
Hell I've made tracks just screaming on
Someone's answering machine from my phone....
