I used to do this as a kid using old transistor radios and a home built organ kit from Tandy's.

I used to tinker with those old pocket transistor radios as a kid too !!!!

There were little boxes inside with a screw and if you turned them you got some strange noises .......you also quite often rendered the radio useless thereafter in the process !!!!!!.
