UNDERGROUND ZERO - FORLORN and LETHAL
I posted this here because this band originated in my hometown of Norwich and because they have Hawkwind connections.
Not only are they a Hawkwind inspired band (this video is not the best example of that) but they are part of Hawkwind's Friends and Relations. They have appeared on an album put out by Hawkwind a long time ago which was a compilation of like minded space rock bands that had a Hawkwind connection. I believe their drummer was the connection but I am unclear what that was.
More interesting to me is that the founder of the band Andrew Rix was a work colleague of mine back at the time when he was first forming this band back in 77/78 at the same time as I was learning guitar. Andrew is the bass player with his wife Judy on lead vocals and his brother Adrian on keyboards and they are the nucleus of UZO. I lost touch with him and I haven't seen him for the best part of 30 yrs but I used to see the band in their early days.
They have even played live with Nik Turner on sax doing Silver Machine.
The band is still going and doing the occasional UK space rock festival and they still have local connections I believe..........but they never made it bigtime.

Top track this one Peter!! Great band! I have the Hawkwind Friends and Relations Album that they were featured on. I've also got a live recording of the Peaceful Green Fair (1983 Norwich) UZO, Nic Turner, and Hear and Now.
UZO like my artworks too

Steve....I posted this mainly because of their Hawkwind connections and the history.....as I knew Andrew the founder at the time he was putting the original band together. We both worked at the same place and a bunch of us used to go out drinking and going to gigs at the weekend....so I knew him quite well. He was playing bass when I was learning guitar and we obviously used to talk about guitars a lot.
As far the the band goes I will be totally honest (I always am).
I was never impressed by the choice of Judy (Andrews girlfriend) as lead singer for a band of that genre. A female vocalist may have worked with a strong rock style but she sounds too weak and that lets the band down IMO.
Also I am not impressed by their track record. 30 years of playing and gigging but where are the albums??? Sure they had some success's playing live gigs but nothing that carried them onwards.
You know yourself how easy it is today to put out an album.
Its lack of ambition and just sheer laziness.
You won't find anything on I-tunes or Amazon for them.
Sorry but a band like that loses respect if they can't supply their fans with new material. They were never destined to be anything but a local band and as far as Hawkwind goes they could only be described as Poor Relations.
Here and Now......another great festival band that were an offshoot of Gong. Daevid Allen was in both bands. One of my friends used to hang out with them in his hippy days and was mates with Steffy Sharpstrings.
Did you check out my other post for a Classic British Psychedelic track.....now that was for the Pink Fairies and that is still ultra cool.

Got to disagree with you Peter about Judi as the lead singer.I think She's is superb on Canes Venatici!! A stonking space rock track IMO!! Reminds me of Bridget Wishart when she was with Hawkwind for a time (Space Bandits is a much underrated album )
True you won't find them on Amazon or i-tunes and they've only released a handful of albums in the last 30 years (11 of those years they weren't actually playing together) but I still rate them as a band
The Peaceful Green Fair sets from UZO (then just called Ground Zero) with guest Nic Turner. And Here and Now's (excellent) set can be downloaded from here

Looks like it was a great festival

Steve....I already had that download from the Peaceful Green Fair as it is on a website about Norwich bands if I remember rightly. There is also a set from Karma Kanix.....another underated band.
The guitarist now plays for House of Thanador....another band on that live circuit. A friend of mine has recently been helping him to write some material.
I was going to gigs when UZO were Ground Zero.....in fact I was at the gig they held to announce the change of name. Another band had that name and it was making things confusing.
Canes Venatici is one of their old tracks and was probably the strongest track of the band....they were still playing it back then.
As far as the lead singer goes all I can say is that if you enjoy them as they are then that's fine but in my opinion a good male singer would have carried that band much further. I really think that they wasted a lot of their potential although to be fair the only way forward back then was to play live until the internet came along. True they didn't play for 11 years.....I believe that was because their day jobs entailed moving. I know Andrew went to Milton Keynes at one point.
Its all a matter of personal opinion and I am always honest about these things and will call a spade, a spade.
Glad you enjoyed them anyway.......I can't find any more material but I know that they have a MySpace page.
