Programmed the drums by hand. Still need more fills and kicks I think.
Kit is one someone miced and uploaded that works in my EXP 24 sampler.

Sand

Yeah I was turned to Sand
beside the Rio Grande
You didn't raise a hand to save me

And I will make my stand
and I will walk this land
my body is made of sand
I'll find you

and you will make your run
beneath the setting sun
and then a single touch
will end you

I am sand, now
take my hand, now
walk along this endless beach

Z.....Like the lyrics....cool song Smile

I also like the use of the trem bar on the lead guitar too.

Drums....better than using loops definitely. What I found was missing was the main snare which needs to be prominent in hard rock tracks because it carries the beat. All I can hear in the verses is the kick drum and that left me looking for the snare...it slows the track down and loses its dynamics.
You need a big crashing snare in there without a doubt.

You have some variation in the drum patterns so the fills are OK but you could add more for effect in this track if you wanted to.

I also felt that the rhythm guitar was a little low in the mix.....most unusual for you Smile

So.....a bit of tweaking and find a good snare and it should be good to go Smile

Cool! Thanks for the advice!
I really have no idea what I'm doing..... Cool

So the snare would normally be on every beat or just 2 & 4?

Thanks Big D!
I need to get to your two newest ones too!

Work is crazy this week -- merging all these projects, and having global network problems between here and India.... Shocked

Z

Z.....Just 2 and 4 if you want a straight 4/4 Hard Rock is fine.

You can put it in other places if you want to experiment with more complex rhythms ......lower the velocity on any extra beats so that they are not quite as loud as the 2 and 4.
Also avoid putting snare beats where the kick drum beats are is advisable.

Hope this helps Smile

Yep. That helps!
I'm also listening to JUST the drums on rock songs on the radio.

Next one will have a basic 4/4 groove with snare on 2/4 and some snare rolls for variety.
And cymbals in all the right places.

It is cool to completely control the beat (I used to always program my drums but back then
I had really crappy sounding kits)

This kit's not bad but the position of the toms in the notes is strange.

And I have more I can try. LOTS of people have done kits that work with my sample player.

Beats need to be as OFF as they can, without killing the flow.

All this 4-4, 2-4, talk is silly. Dont count beats, FEEL them, "on or "off", matters none...Its a FEEL instrument MORE than people think.

Drummers are MASTER Improv-ers!

Drum programing should NOT be a perfect-lining-up-thing...Its a feel, or beat.

Let me ask...IF we are playing with "time", we just let it run straight???? Then we are not playing with it..We are SETTING it.

Anyway.

Don't Panic Bro!

I'm just talking about the "basic framework"

Yes I will have late beats, and fills, and improv type stuff in there.
Hell, I'll probably put the sound of me dropping my stick in there somewhere.... Cool

It takes longer to do all that, but it sounds cool when it's right.

It's hard to explain how I'm doing it. Kind of "long custom patterns".

So I do a 16 bar pattern, and I change things for every bar, to mix it up. Then I do other long patterns and splice them and layer them.
Then I adjust the timing of the notes and the velocity / loudness as I go, until it sounds more like a real drummer.

You didn't hear much of that on "Sand" -- just a touch. This one will be much more customized.

I think you will see what I mean when I finish it....

You are wiser than you think. Cool

Check out Crimson Sky and let me know if the drums sound mechanical.
I tried pretty hard to bring them to life.
